NEDA: Telecommunications for Non English Speaking people with Disabilities

Telecommunication services provide vital connectivity and participation for people with disability. However people from Non English Speaking Backgrounds (NESB) with disability face a number of barriers to accessing affordable telecommunications services, and information on specialist equipment and programs.

The National Ethnic Disability Association has produced a fact sheet titled ‘Access to Telecommunications for people from Non English Speaking Backgrounds with Disability’. It explains prominent issues facing this group and gives three eye opening case studies.

Telstra brings voice conversion to text message service to all consumer customers

Telstra is now making available to all consumer customers, what it says is an “innovative service” – the conversion of voicemail to text – after encouraging feedback from its business customers using the new service.

The company says its consumer customers can now take advantage of the Telstra Voice2Text service, which allows users to read their voice messages by converting voicemail to text. Telstra Consumer Executive Director, Glenice Maclellan, said today customers who subscribe to the service have their voicemail messages converted to text and sent to their mobile phone as an SMS.
